CATL's Zeng gifts $62.5M in shares to new Ningde research institute
CATL chairman Robin Zeng donated 1.5 million shares worth about $62.5M to a Shanghai Jiao Tong-linked institute in Ningde, Fujian, marking the second major C-suite share gift from the battery giant in 18 months.
Scope of change
- Robin Zeng donated 1.5 million CATL shares worth about 420 million yuan ($62.5M) to a Shanghai Jiao Tong University institute in Ningde, valued at the October 14 close of 280.12 yuan.
- The institute was established in June 2026 by the Ningde municipal government, Shanghai Jiao Tong, the Fujian Provincial Department of Education and CATL, with its first 23,000 sqm phase due in December 2027.
- Roughly 50 professional master's students are targeted for the 2027 intake, including 20 seats in a dedicated CATL joint-training programme.
- CATL installed 333.0 GWh of batteries in the first eight months of 2026, giving it a 39.4% global market share, up from 37.7% a year earlier (SNE Research).
- Vice chairman Li Ping and his wife Liao Mei agreed in May 2025 to donate 4.05 million CATL shares (about 1 billion yuan) to Fudan University for the Xuemin Natural Sciences Research Fund.

CATL chairman Robin Zeng handed over 1.5 million of his own company shares — worth about 420 million yuan ($62.5 million) — to a Shanghai Jiao Tong University research body in Fujian, in one of the largest executive share gifts to a Chinese university this year.
The donation closed on Thursday at the 2026 World Energy Storage Conference, valuing the parcel at its October 14 A-share close of 280.12 yuan per share. It flows to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Fujian (Ningde) Advanced Research Institute, set up in June 2026 by four parties: the Ningde municipal government, Shanghai Jiao Tong, the Fujian Provincial Department of Education — and CATL itself.
What exactly did Zeng give, and to whom?
One point five million shares, give or take a round-lot detail. The recipient is not a Shanghai Jiao Tong branch or satellite campus, despite the branding. It is a separately incorporated institute that pulls on the university's research muscle while running applied work, student training and commercialisation inside Ningde — the Fujian city that hosts CATL's headquarters and now, increasingly, its philanthropic footprint.
The institute's research remit covers new-energy batteries, photovoltaics, zero-carbon systems and electric transportation. Battery cells, in plainer words: the things CATL actually sells.
How big is the institute, and when does it open for students?
- Floor area: about 23,000 square metres for the first phase, built adjacent to the company's 21C Lab.
- Occupancy: slated for December 2027.
- Intake: applications opened October 10 for the 2027 academic year, targeting roughly 50 full-time professional master's students.
- Dedicated CATL seats: 20 under a joint-training programme.
- Structure: first-year coursework at Shanghai Jiao Tong, then relocation for industry- and university-supervised research in Ningde.
Translation for the rest of us: CATL is not just donating cash. It is co-designing the curriculum.
Is this Zeng's first big academic gift?
No. In May 2025, CATL disclosed that vice chairman Li Ping and his wife, Liao Mei, had signed an agreement to donate 4.05 million CATL shares — worth around 1 billion yuan at the time — to their shared alma mater, Fudan University. That gift seeded the Fudan University Xuemin Natural Sciences Research Fund.
So Zeng's cheque is the second in roughly eighteen months from the C-suite, and both tap the same playbook: shares, not cash, and a Chinese top-tier university.
Why does CATL's market position matter here?
Because a donation only carries weight if the donor's stock still has legs. CATL installed 333.0 GWh of batteries in the first eight months of 2026, giving it a 39.4% global market share, up from 37.7% a year earlier, according to South Korean tracker SNE Research.
In plainer numbers: nearly four in every ten kilowatt-hours of EV battery capacity fitted to vehicles worldwide this year sit in CATL cells. The shares Zeng just gave away are not a token gesture from a struggling supplier.
Takeaway: the gift is less a one-off than the visible tip of a longer CATL playbook — locking in Ningde-based talent pipelines while the market share is still expanding.
What to watch next
- December 2027: first phase of the Ningde institute ready for occupancy.
- 2027 academic year: roughly 50 graduate students on site, with 20 in the CATL joint-training track.
- Q4 2026 / FY 2027: SNE Research's full-year installation data — the cleanest read on whether CATL's 39.4% share holds or drifts.
The verdict, for now: a measured bet on the local talent base next door, paid in shares rather than yuan.
