China opens joint probe into Maextro V800 brake failures

Three Chinese regulators have formed a joint investigation into brake pedal bracket failures on the Maextro V800 luxury MPV, co-developed by Huawei and JAC, one week after a Dongchedi test video.

Scope of change

  1. Three Chinese agencies — MIIT, Cyberspace Administration, and State Administration for Market Regulation — opened a joint probe on Thursday into Maextro V800 brake pedal bracket failures.
  2. Dongchedi video published October 8 showed brake pedal brackets breaking in three V800 vehicles during 100 km/h to 0 emergency braking tests.
  3. Maextro V800 launched August 5 priced from 766,000 to 1,016,000 yuan ($113,900 at launch).
  4. JAC shares (SSE: 600418) closed down 10.01% at the daily limit on October 8 and continued to decline.
  5. Maextro pledged a free bracket upgrade for existing owners but described the test conditions as 'non-standard extreme test conditions' and reported no failures in customer use.

Three Chinese government agencies have formed a joint investigation into brake pedal bracket failures on the Maextro V800, a luxury MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) co-developed by Huawei and Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Corp (JAC) and priced from 766,000 yuan to 1,016,000 yuan ($113,900 at launch).

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Thursday it will work with the Cyberspace Administration of China and the State Administration for Market Regulation. The agencies will build on earlier inquiries and act in line with laws and regulations, MIIT said in a statement that addressed brake pedal bracket failures during testing and promised timely updates.

The probe lands one week after automotive information platform Dongchedi published a video on October 8. Brake pedal brackets broke in three V800 vehicles during emergency braking tests from 100 km/h to a standstill, the testers said. Failures prevented normal brake pedal use, so the testers brought the vehicles to a stop using the emergency braking function activated through the Park control.

What did Maextro say?

Maextro responded the same day with two core claims. First: no brake pedal bracket base failures have occurred in actual customer use since deliveries began. The brand described the video conditions as "non-standard extreme test conditions." Second: the braking system was developed and validated to requirements exceeding Chinese national and industry standards.

Maextro nonetheless pledged to improve the bracket base design and offer existing owners a free upgrade. It also said it would systematically review and strengthen design validation, testing parameters, and production quality management. The three-agency statement did not address Dongchedi's testing methods or the brand's earlier explanation.

Why does the case matter?

The V800 launched on August 5 as a flagship MPV aimed at the premium business travel market currently served by the Toyota Alphard and Lexus LM. Maextro sits as the highest-positioned brand in Huawei's HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) lineup, the partnership architecture through which Huawei supplies intelligent vehicle technology to multiple Chinese OEMs (original equipment manufacturers).

A safety cloud over that flagship cuts to the heart of HIMA's premium positioning. The video also hit JAC's stock: shares (SSE: 600418) closed down 10.01% at the daily limit on October 8 and kept sliding in subsequent sessions.

What changes for buyers and investors?

Existing V800 owners now wait on Maextro's free upgrade program and its timing. Prospective buyers face a sourcing decision with regulatory action unresolved. Investors track whether JAC's slide stabilizes once findings emerge. None of the three agencies has named a reporting deadline or confirmed a recall pathway.

What to watch next

MIIT's next statement, the scope of any mandated recall, the rollout schedule for Maextro's bracket design upgrade, and JAC's share price reaction through the agencies' reporting cycle.
