Chinese vehicle sales fell 8.4% to 2.956 million units in September
CAAM data show Chinese vehicle sales down 8.4% to 2.956 million units in September, with domestic volume off 23% while exports climbed 61% to 1.053 million.
Scope of change
- Total Chinese vehicle sales, including exports, fell 8.4% year-on-year to 2.956 million units in September 2026 (CAAM).
- Domestic sales dropped 23% to 1.903 million units; exports rose 61% to 1.053 million units.
- Light passenger vehicle sales declined 9.5% to 2.588 million units; commercial vehicles were flat at 368,000 units.
- Overall vehicle production in China fell 8.7% to 2.990 million units.
- September 2025 comparison base was strong: sales had risen 15% to 3.226 million units a year earlier.

Chinese-made vehicle sales, including exports, fell 8.4% year-on-year to 2.956 million units in September 2026, according to wholesale data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). The decline follows a 15% rise to 3.226 million units in September 2025, which turns the comparison base sharply against the market.
The headline figure conceals two markets moving in opposite directions. Domestic sales dropped 23% to 1.903 million units, down from 2.470 million units a year earlier. Exports surged 61% to 1.053 million units, up from 756,000 units.
To put the shift in scale: China exported roughly 297,000 more vehicles in September this year than last, yet the domestic market shed about 567,000 units. Export growth therefore absorbed only about half of the lost home demand.
How the segments split?
Light passenger vehicle sales fell 9.5% to 2.588 million units in September. Commercial vehicle sales held flat at 368,000 units. Production across the country declined 8.7% to 2.990 million units — a figure only marginally above total sales, indicating factories are not yet building significant unsold stock.
What does the split signal for manufacturers?
A 23% domestic contraction within a single month is a severe reading for any market of this size. For comparison, the entire September domestic volume of 1.903 million units is smaller than the 2.470 million units China bought at home in the same month a year earlier — a gap larger than the annual sales of most national markets in Europe.
The export surge of 61% confirms that Chinese OEMs (vehicle manufacturers selling under their own brands) are leaning on overseas volume to offset weakening home demand. CAAM compiles its figures from wholesale deliveries — vehicles shipped from factories to dealers and export channels — so the data reflect manufacturer dispatches rather than final retail registrations.
For plant planners at multinational OEMs and tier-one suppliers, the September numbers point to capacity pressure inside China. Domestic wholesale volumes running 23% below prior-year levels, combined with production down 8.7%, leave assembly utilization exposed in a market where GlobalData analysis has already flagged restructuring pressures across the industry.
Suppliers with China-dependent programs should track whether the domestic decline reflects demand weakness or deliberate channel inventory reduction by OEMs. A second consecutive month of sharply negative domestic figures would suggest the former.
What to watch next
The October CAAM release will show whether the 23% domestic drop was a one-month correction or the start of a sustained contraction. Watch also whether export growth — now running above one million units per month — continues to absorb the output that Chinese plants previously directed to the home market, and whether any OEM announces capacity or workforce adjustments in response.
