BMW starts Gen 6 battery production in Shenyang with $1.49B plant

BMW's Shenyang Gen 6 battery plant, backed by 10 billion yuan ($1.49 billion), enters mass production as the Neue Klasse i3 50L covers 1,213 km on a single charge with 1% remaining.

Scope of change

  1. BMW committed 10 billion yuan ($1.49 billion) to its Gen 6 battery plant in Shenyang, spanning 240,000 square meters.
  2. Long-wheelbase Neue Klasse i3 50L covered 1,213 km on a single charge in a road test with 1% remaining, using a 113.4-kWh battery.
  3. Shenyang is the third site in BMW's global Gen 6 battery network after Debrecen, Hungary and Irlbach-Straßkirchen, Germany.
  4. Pre-orders for the China-only long-wheelbase Neue Klasse iX3 opened August 21; deliveries start in November.
  5. Energy Master control unit entered trial production at the Shenyang powertrain plant in late September 2025.

BMW has put 10 billion yuan ($1.49 billion) into a new battery complex in Shenyang, China. The plant entered Gen 6 high-voltage battery mass production on Thursday, BMW announced.

How big is the Shenyang investment?

The Shenyang facility covers a planned 240,000 square meters of floor area. That is roughly five times the size of BMW's existing battery production footprint in China. Construction started in May 2023. Shenyang now joins Debrecen, Hungary, and Irlbach-Straßkirchen, Germany, as the third site in BMW's global Gen 6 battery network.

What does the Gen 6 line actually produce?

The Shenyang line assembles battery packs around an 800-volt architecture. It pairs those packs with BMW's sixth-generation electric drive technology. The cells are large-format cylindrical units. Output will initially supply the Neue Klasse iX3 and Neue Klasse i3, BMW said. BMW has not disclosed unit capacity, cell supplier mix or shift patterns for the new line.

How solid is the 1,213-km range claim?

BMW said a long-wheelbase Neue Klasse i3 50L covered 1,213 km on one charge during a real-world road test. The car finished with 1% battery remaining. The route mixed expressways, national highways, rural roads and urban streets. The vehicle carried a 113.4-kWh battery and recorded combined energy use of 8.8 kWh per 100 km.

BMW called the i3 50L an "electric endurance champion" in its official statement. The 1,213-km figure is one road-trial result, not a certified WLTP or CLTC cycle rating. Treat the headline number as a marketing claim, not a load-bearing one, until independent verification arrives and the company releases a comparable test report.

What else is built on the Shenyang site?

BMW's Energy Master control unit entered trial production at the Shenyang powertrain plant in late September. The unit manages Gen 6 battery operations. Its hardware and software were developed in-house. Shenyang is BMW's only production base outside Germany that builds the Energy Master.

The same location now combines casting, engine, high-voltage battery and Energy Master output under one roof. BMW says no other global plant matches that integration. The company gave no detail, however, on how the four lines are sequenced for shared staffing, tooling or logistics.

When do Neue Klasse cars reach Chinese buyers?

BMW opened pre-orders for the China-only long-wheelbase Neue Klasse iX3 on August 21. Deliveries start in November. The i3 50L is a long-wheelbase sedan engineered for China. Regulatory filings list its wheelbase at 3,005 mm, 39 mm longer than the prior China-built i3.

How local is the software stack?

BMW tailored key vehicle systems for Chinese buyers through domestic partnerships. The i3's driver-assistance suite was co-developed with Momenta (HKEX: 6880). Its infotainment system adds AI voice features built with Alibaba and DeepSeek. These tie-ins show how deeply BMW is embedding itself in China's software supply base ahead of local rivals.

What to watch next

  • November deliveries of the long-wheelbase Neue Klasse iX3 in China and first volume data.
  • Independent verification of the i3 50L's 1,213-km single-charge claim against a certified cycle.
  • Energy Master ramp from trial to series output at the Shenyang powertrain plant.
  • Confirmed cell volumes, supplier mix and capacity utilization for Gen 6 Shenyang lines.
